Our beloved flagship steam locomotive, McCloud River Railroad #25, turns 100 years old this September! We’re celebrating with a special weekend jam packed with fun activities, special excursions, special discount pricing and more! This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to celebrate this monumental occasion for this storied relic of America’s past!

Event Itinerary

Special Excursion Behind the 25 from Garibaldi to Wheeler! (September 20 ONLY)

Let’s get the highlight of the event front and center: a round trip ride over the entire in service portion of Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad behind the McCloud 25! This 4 hour round trip journey departs from our Garibaldi Station bound for the town of Wheeler, where passengers will be able to enjoy a 1 hour layover before heading back to Garibaldi! As the train rolls along, passengers will be able to take in the coastal views along Tillamook Bay, Nehalem Bay and the Pacific Ocean as the 25 chugs its way through the majestic forests and estuaries at the foot of the Coast Range Mountains.

This is one of the very few all ages excursions that travels the entirety of the active railroad between Garibaldi and Wheeler, as most of our trips operate between just two of the towns at any given time. For those that want a slightly shorter 2.5 hour trip at a lower price, we are also offering an option to depart from Rockaway Beach on this same trip (see the Rockaway Beach departure listing to book from this station)! There is no better way to celebrate this milestone birthday for the McCloud 25 than taking a ride through some of the most magnificent scenery that the Pacific Northwest has to offer!

Regular Coastal Excursion Trains at Discount Pricing (September 20-21)

Enjoy our signature Coastal Excursion Train at discounted pricing where all passengers ride for $25 in honor of the McCloud 25’s 100th Birthday! In addition, all cab rides have been dropped from $150 to $100 so more people are able to enjoy an up close and personal view of the 25 in action at 100 years old!

*Note: This pricing is only valid for the weekend of September 20-21. All other Coastal Excursion Train departures remain at normal pricing.

Coastal Excursion Description:

Take a step back in time by climbing aboard our signature historic train excursion along the scenic Tillamook Bay and coastal estuaries between Garibaldi and Rockaway Beach. Departing from both Garibaldi and Rockaway Beach, this train ride will take you on a 30 minute trip to the opposite location from your departure point. On board narration on this excursion treats passengers to an immersive step back in time, complete with beautiful views and educational information all while traveling at a leisurely pace to your destination.

Once at your layover point, passengers are able to get off to explore the restaurants, shops and of course the beach! The minimum layover time is 30 minutes, but you can choose a later return time if you want to have a sit down meal in or more time to explore.

Ride the Rails Aboard an Authentic Railroad Speeder! (September 20-21)

Speeders were at one time the primary mode of transportation for railroad maintenance of way crews, who are responsible for the upkeep of railroad tracks. Also known as “motorcars,” these small cars give passengers a unique opportunity to see the beauty of OCSR’s route from a whole new perspective. Thanks to the generosity of West Coast Railroaders Group, there will be multiple speeders on hand to give guests a look into how the laborers of Americas railroading past traveled the rails. Speeder rides will depart intermittently throughout the day from our Garibaldi Station only.

No Children Under the Age of 2 or Pets are Permitted on the Speeders. Advanced reservations will not be taken for Speeder Rides. Walkup tickets will only be available from 10 AM-4 PM both days.

Ford Model A’s on Display at Garibaldi! (September 20 ONLY! 11:00 AM-4:00 PM)

Cars from the era of the McCloud 25 will be on display thanks to the Beaver Chapter of the Model A Club of America! These cars were the pinnacle of automobile technology from the tail end America’s Roaring 20s. They represent a pivotal point in the history of both automobile transportation as well as the beginning of the downfall of America’s golden age of passenger rail travel. Lovingly restored and maintained by their owners much like the 25 has been by us, passengers will be able to view the cars as board the train or layover at Garibaldi. The Model As will be on display in the parking lot adjacent to our boarding area and Lumberman’s Memorial Park.

Special Edition T-shirts!

To forever remember the McCloud 25’s 100th birthday, we have designed some special edition T-shirts! They are available while supplies last in sizes Youth Extra Small to Adult Triple Extra Large. They will be available for purchase at our gift shop on board the Neahkahnie Mountain Car as well as at our Garibaldi Depot area during the weekend of the event. Adult shirts will be $25 and youth shirts will be $22.

Indoor Cars

Coach Car – Cushioned seats with windows at each seat that can slide open.

Table Car – Two seat and four set tables with chairs. Fully enclosed with windows that can slide open.

Outdoor Cars

Covered Open Car – Open air car equipped with bench seats and a roof.

Open Top Car – Open air car equipped with bench seats and no roof.

Caboose Rental – A private caboose for your group to have an exclusive experience on our train! (For a Private Group of up to 10 People)

Cab Ride Seating – Ride with the Engine Crew on the McCloud 25! Up to 2 passengers per trip!
